Connecting to Eduroam

What is Eduroam?

Eduroam is a wireless service used be the Murdoch community (and visitors) that allows easy access to the wireless network at all Murdoch campuses as well as other participating institutions. Murdoch staff and students will require a Murdoch University ID and password to connect to eduroam. Visitors from other participating institutions will require login credentials from their home university.

Connection Settings:

Eduroam uses standards-based protocols, which means that most wireless devices (including mobile devices) can connect without requiring any proprietary software. 

The generic settings for all operating systems are:

Username Your Murdoch username@murdoch.edu.au 
eg. 20012345@murdoch.edu.au
Password Your Murdoch password
Network Authentication WPA Enterprise or WPA2 Enterprise (recommended)
Authentication Type PEAP
Authentication Protocol MSCHAPv2
Server Certificate eduroam.murdoch.edu.au
Certificate Authority

Digicert Global Root CA

 

Note: Advanced users who require the security certificate file can locate it here
Note 2: Eduroam users from other institutions should simply connect by using your home institution username and domain (eg jbloggs@institution.edu.au), password and security settings.

Windows 10 Setup Instructions

To connect to Eduroam using Windows 10, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on the Wireless icon on your taskbar


     
  2. Select eduroam in the listed wifi signals and click Connect

     
  3. Enter your your Murdoch username followed by @murdoch.edu.au (eg. 12345678@murdoch.edu.au) and your Murdoch password then click OK.

Note: If the above instructions do not work, then the following workaround needs to be applied

TO REMOVE NETWORK:

 

1. Click wifi icon

2. Click 'Network and Internet Settings'

3. Select 'Wifi' on the left-hand side -> Click 'Manage Known Networks'

4. Select 'Eduroam' -> Forget

 

Manually Configuring Eduroam 

1. Click the Start button (Windows Icon) in the bottom left of your screen and type ‘Control Panel’

2. Once Control Panel is open -> Select Network and Internet 

 

3. Select Network and Sharing Centre 

4. Click ‘Set up a New Connection or Network’ 

 

 

5. Select ‘Manually connect to a wireless network’ 

 

6. Fill in as pictured below: 
- Network Name 
- Security Type 
-> NEXT 

 

 

7. Select the ‘Security’ tab -> Click ‘Settings’ 

 

 

 

8. Fill in as pictured below: 
- Tick ‘Connect to these servers’ 
- Type eduroam.ad.murdoch.edu.au 
- Tick ‘DigiCert Global Root CA’ 
- Tick ‘Enable Identity Privacy’ 
- Type anonymous 
-> CONFIGURE 
 
 

 

9. Untick this box -> OK 
 

 

10. Advanced Settings 

 

 

11. Tick ‘Specify authentication mode’ and select ‘User Authentication’ from the dropdown. 
-> SAVE CREDENTIALS 

 

12. Enter YOUR Murdoch staff or student number @murdoch.edu.au and your Murdoch Password. 
-> OK 

 
 

13. Click the wifi button on the bottom-right of the Windows taskbar and select eduroam 

-> CONNECT 

 

14. Continue Connecting? -> CONNECT

  Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 Setup Instructions:

To connect to Eduroam using Windows 7 or 8, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the 'Network & Sharing Center' by navigating to Start > Control Panel (in Windows 8.1 / 10, right-click the Windows button and select Control Panel)

     
  2. Click Network and Internet

     
  3. Click Network and Sharing Center

     
  4. Click Set up a new connection or network

     
  5. Select Manually connect to a wireless network and click Next 

     
  6. Under Enter information for the wireless network enter the information below:
    Network name: eduroam
    Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption type: AES
    Click Next

     
  7. After the message Successfully added eduroam appears, click Change connection settings

     
  8. Click the Security tab and select Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) for network authentication method and then click Settings.

     
  9. Ensure Validate server certificate is checked
    Ensure "Digicert Global Root CA" is checked under Trusted Root Certification Authorities
    Under Select Authentication Method, select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)


     
     
  10. Click Configure and uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) then click OK.

     
  11. Click OK to exit the PEAP Properties window
    Click OK again to exit the Wireless properties window
    Click Close on the change connection settings window

     
  12. When you are in range of a university wireless access point, click the network icon in your system tray and then the eduroam wireless network

     
  13. You will see the message Additional information is needed to connect to eduroam at the bottom right of your screen.

     
  14. Click this message and enter your Murdoch username followed by @murdoch.edu.au (eg. 12345678@murdoch.edu.au) and your Murdoch password then click OK
 
You should now be connected!

 Apple iPhone/iOS Setup Instructions: 

  1. Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi
     
  2. In the Network section, click on eduroam

     
  3. Enter your Murdoch University credentials (including the @murdoch.edu.au in the Username field) and then click Join



     
  4. If you are within range of the eduroam wireless services, you will be prompted to accept a secure certificate. If the certificate is 'eduroam.murdoch.edu.au' and has been signed by Thawte - click Trust

  5. You should now see a tick next to the eduroam Wireless network as below. This indicates that you have connected successfully.

Android Setup Instructions:

 Please note the following:

  • These instructions are provided as a courtesy only - IT Services does not support Android devices.
  • Instructions may vary between devices
  1.  Navigate to the Settings page, and in "Wireless & networks" click on the Wifi setting. 


     
  2. Ensure that Wi-Fi is turned on and select eduroam


     
  3. If you have previously connected to eduroam and need to reconfigure this service:Tap and hold "eduroam"
    Tap "Forget network".
  4. Enter settings as per the table below and click Connect

When in range of an eduroam wireless service, you should connect automatically.

Apple Mac OS X Setup Instructions:
  1. Click on the Apple 'Airport' icon near the top right of your screen to display the wireless networks menu.

    Select the "Eduroam" network from the list.

     
  2. You will be asked to log into the wireless network

    Enter your Murdoch username and password. Your username is in the format of "studentnumber@murdoch.edu.au".

    Click the OK button.

 

3. You may be presented with a Verify Certificate window. If so, click on the Show Certificate button and verify that this is a certificate signed by Thawte.

By selecting the Always trust these certificates checkbox you won't be prompted to verify your institutions certificate again.


Click the Continue button.

Note: If you've changed your Murdoch password then you'll need to tell your Mac to forget the Murdoch Wireless Network via the Keychain Access app (click the magnifying glass icon and type Keychain. Delete any references to Eduroam).
